A Soaring Lobby and Multi-tasking Café Take Centre Stage at a Creative Agency’s Revamped Office

The office café is an element of workplace design that has seen notable evolution over the past decade. There was a time when the lunch room was little more than an afterthought – a few tables and a microwave tucked into a windowless space next to the copy room. At Match Marketing, the café has pride of place – a work area adjoining the reception lobby was moved to make way for this new space, which is the main thoroughfare to the offices.

The entry procession was the focus of our project, and the client wanted the space to make a splash. This agency works with top brands such as L’Oréal, LG and Adidas, and touts itself as an expert in experiential design, so it was essential that its home base provide an inspiring experience. A visit to the company previously began with a stroll through a double-height vestibule filled with natural light and little else. Taking advantage of the clerestory windows above the doorway, we moved the reception desk into this small but soaring space. Crisp white walls reflect the sunlight, while walnut millwork adds additional warmth. Fire engine–red chairs in the small waiting area bring a blast of colour and hint at the café beyond.

In a sense the café is an expansion of both the reception and work areas. The client’s creative team contributed high-impact graphics that pull in the same red used in the lobby, and the walnut millwork continues here as well. An array of seating accommodates meetings with clients as comfortably as it does casual confabs between employees. Upholstered walnut booths line the windows, while long stretches of high-top tables parallel a bar area that establishes the space as a cheerful events venue that is equal parts refined and relaxed.
