After operating out of a co-working setting since its founding in 2019, boutique executive labour and employment law firm, Mathers McHenry & Co., was looking for a space to call its own. It found a suitable location on the 9th floor of an office tower just outside of Toronto’s financial district, but the 6,500-square-foot interior lacked personality and warmth. B|A was called on to transform the lacklustre space into one that is more aligned to the firm’s sensibilities – supportive, welcoming, and inclusive. 

First to go was the fake mahogany panelling that felt stifling and too traditionally corporate for the young firm. The layout was then opened up to create an easy flow while still accommodating different levels of privacy through the inclusion of a large boardroom, smaller private offices along the perimeter, and an open bullpen with six workstations. Transparent glass wall systems from Teknion separate the individual rooms without blocking sightlines and light transference, maintaining a bright and airy atmosphere throughout. 

To add character and establish a warm and refreshing aesthetic, B|A utilized a palette of soft greens, blues, and yellows. A customized topiary mural from Stockholm runs the entire length of one wall, while in the boardroom an installation of forest green, carved-felt acoustic panels feature graphic and two-dimensional art deco-inspired arches. Elsewhere, crisp white walls form a clean backdrop for artwork, including a vibrant yellow neon sign that greets clients in reception. 

The central multifunctional lounge/lobby feels decidedly “family room,” with high-backed armchairs and green-upholstered sofas forming an intimate conversation area. Overhead, a sinuous light fixture comprising linear metal rungs and frosted glass orbs instills an industrial elegance and, underfoot, a traditional-style carpet in shades of yellow and grey ties the grouping together. 

With simple yet refreshing moves, B|A delivered an unexpected and rather remarkable corporate law setting – one that is open, transparent, and reflective of Mathers McHenry & Co.’s personable approach.
